schaut euch diese eleganten kurven an. noch nie ist jemand engelsgleicher über das weisse puder gehuscht, grazil, und doch eloquent. im hintergrund schön zu sehen: der monte pichu, höchster berg der anden. und da beschwere sich noch ein mensch (einer der unter wasser so aussieht wie zentralaustralischer roadkill) ich schrübe zuwenig. ich schreibe nämlich viel, aber wenig würde man als hampelmann wie eben jener Jener auch nur im ansatz zu verstehen anzusetzen. jetzt ist es raus, und ich mit.

Was ich hier auf dem umseitigen Bild mache ist nicht etwa einbeinig Roulette (russisch) zu spielen. Mitnichten, wie Frau Zwiliing sage täte, weilte sie noch auf unserem Kontinente. Ich gebe hier die letzten Unibücher zurück, und plane nicht, ähnliches wieder auszuleihen. Einen besonderen Dank an Ü-gast Miss Fleck für ihren alljährlichen Fahrdienst (wo war die Mütze eigentlich?) if that's all i learned, at least i learned it well. or wall; this, for that matter, is an object i strive to save. why? 1) it might be that its mural inscriptions are transitions that allow collective memories that history usually marginalizes or forgets to be written in our urban fabric, and 2)
it can always happen, in this wild and beautiful world, that you turn around the next corner and encounter a bunch of ferocious roaring tigers. fortunately, they adopted me - hybrid of friday and mogli, i now learn the rules of the jungle instead those of postcolonial literature restrictions.

it's as easy as that: a couple of re-civilized outdoor artist come to the gore and spray-can their impression of the unexpressable white between the lines on a wall. what we ended up with is, of course, just in the middle of the process; unpoised, tresspassing the preposterous line of vigor, an attempt to break through self-colluded agoraphobia; renouncing the need to represent, and emphasize on 'to re-present', or, in this case, to 're-represent' (the form is uncertain).

now to something completely different: as i have just heard fro the man famous for his outstanding magnanimity, mr. jonathan 'johnny skankin' edwards, that date and place of the france party have now been confirmed. i bow my head and announce:
it is now officially the weekend from the 5.-7. of august that we will join to celebrate ourselves in a small beautiful place that will be, for that time, the hub of the ubiquitous world.

you just need a bigger chair. Or you need faith to jump, or a rocketman to shoot you, or very tall horse, or a ladder out of gold, or legs like gogo-gadget. What happened to him actually? i don't know, just as, after all these yaers of wild guesses, we still don't know how he behaved in bed (big speculations).
Well, as you can see on your right, i've done some efforts to get where i want to be, but now it is friday afternoon, the sun is shining coldly, and i feel wasted after a workshop with artists who want to be treated like primary school pupils, it seems.
As i was saying to my grandma the other day, i feel like three personalities: like a student when with paul, like a teacher when with the workshop guys, and then, sometimes, timidly appearing in between, is my self, struggling with the weight of the civilized world.
what else? i jumped off a kitchen table with a duck-shaped umbrella and a top hat and destroyed a huge handmade water purifier; i played soccer against the architects of federation square, scored a goal and kicked an opponent almost into hospital; i dreamt that i was poor and in fact became rich the next day; there is creation and destruction going on all the time i'd say...
well then, let's create and destruct more, if this is the purpose;

There are many legends and klischees about australia, and one of them is that this country is constantly hot and sunny, and that there is so much sun, dangerous sun, that australians never leave home with their full body cloathing equipment tight around their cheeks. well, it is not so as the cool breeze from antarctica states by ungently entering the space between the buttons of my shirt.
talking of space:
the workshop at the vca, that, under many things, deals with the question of finding a new performance space, took interesting turns when we went to explore the city's drains, getting close to what one may call the inner australia...well, read it in the thesis.
talking of the thesis: there are some pictures of postcolonial embodiment down below.

and now to something completely different:
i inform you that this year, in august, a feast of friends will be held at the factory, dole, france. as some veterans might know, good things have happened there before, and the new exploration of a third party in this wonderful franche-comte setting has been much discussed. But as master of the ceremony jonathan ed. just confirmed, something will happen. details will follow.

find it. or rather find him. he was actually the only male in that territory, which makes him very excited, as you can see. in koala terms, excitment means something like nodding your head for 2,4 secs. then the energy lost in this action requires another 3,2 hours of sleep and 2 tons of leaves to be eaten.

anyway, so many things that hit my mind happened this week that i can barely go on talking about sleeping koalas, after spending months of looking into the tree tops of southern victoria.

there was for example our chocolate night; in the tradtion of the fluegel-, and then later the affentanz evening, we invited some elaborate people to make them ponder and create on the subject of chocolate. good stuff we got, to speak in yodaterms, and if anyone wants to see footie fan matthew naked except a strip of mars bars around his waist, pretty much following the tradtion of sumo couture, let me know, i send you the picture.

then i had my first workshop. a couple of art students listenend to the words of paul and me, and now we'll play around the legendary what is your name text till we get something out of it, which very well could be called a graffiti-based street perfomance.

right after that, master fl.fl.fleischmann packed his things and left the holy country of australia, going back to germany via 5 days of thailnd, inviting us to an afghan restaurant for dinner. as you can see, there is quite some internationalitly in his mission...we are going to miss him.

after having handed in and discussed the first written features of the work that will be known as my thesis to paul, i took the board, and the 3 headed melbourne surf crew went off to philip isand. philip island is of course famous for its pinguin parade, a spectale where every night, at dusk, hundreds of 2 litre coca cola bottle sized pinguins jump out of the sea, cross the beach and walk straight to the pub. very impressive, except for huge crowds of tourists that actually outnumbered the stars.

Not as if there is not enough time and space and things to do in beloved Melbourne, but for some reasons I will take off to there place where it all began, referring to Australian colonial history, close to a place called botany bay, on a day that some might think of “Australia day” while others yet might want to think of “Invasion day”.
Anyway, I’ll be in Sydney for a couple of days, in order to interview the guy who produced the play I am working with, and to have a look at paul’s installations in some museum.

when you suddenly can have a shover, or let the toilet flush whenever you want. i am, anyway, back to work, and started reading and writing in new dimensions, as it is time to do so, i think. the work surveillance camera in my office, constantly obsvering what i do, made these pics from me in oder to sned them down to hte unimlebourne surveillance of foreign student work department, which, if not fulfilling their harsh and laborous demands, have the right to send you staright into a detention center in the outback, where you will be forced to live of possum milk and kangeroo fur.

i'm back, well in safe, after a couple of days at the wilderness coast, which got it's name because of its officially approved wilderness. wild as it is, nothing can endure in this environment for long, not even the boardwalk through the jungle to the sea. that is why a roup of young landscape students made their way off five hours from melbourne to redisign it. not without taking an literature and communication postgrad who would ensure the broader mind aspects of their work. in my free time i jump on rocks, kept the fire going, made german pancakes and cought my first fish (salmon), and talked to the forest, which, as an interesting matter of fact, talked back, as it was inhabited by the famous layre bird, a species that like parrots imitate anything what they hear. you often wander who is using a chainsaw in the middle of the night until you find out...
anyway, back in melbourne the project is pushed forward, with the start of the workshop coming soon, endless stuff to read and 12323 ideas in my scattered mind.

there are words in this country, that maybe difficult to pronounce, but when it comes to remember them, i fail completely. the name of croajingolong is such an example, however, it is also the name of a park in the east of victoria, and it there where i'm spending my easterdays, following a university field trip, consulting young students, and teaching them the art of hidden literature in colonial board walk architecture.
the australian tradition during easter time does, as a sad matter of fact, not involve hiding eggs and eating loads of chocolate, but it means eating eggs and loads of chocolate. and there are these hot cross buns, delicious when freshly backed, which the british would call a puff scone and the germans a labberrosinenbroetchen, and the french, of course, would not even have a close look at it, and, humble as they are, simply say : "ah, non."
due to the big rabbit plague some time ago there have been movements to replace the common figure of rabbit formed chocolate into native animals, such as the endangered bilby.

such are the times, and arent't we glad?

this is getting spooky; after the other days pancake, i accidentily came across a random piece of red earth on a concrete plaza, and, as if drawn by god's own hands, it was in the shaped of the southern continent.
anyway, sad moments as i brought laura to the airport, and bigger the surprise even when i came home and two german backpacker where sleeping in my bed. well, better than spiders, i thought, and nonetheless you know that germans are mostly harmless. that's why paul and i went to the goehte institute today, hoping for some encouragement for this fantastic german australian collaboration i am the result of. talking of collaboration: mark, a guy from the vca who is writing his phd on collaboration, happened to be in the following sms communication: he had a wrong number, a fact he didn't know while he wanted to send a message to me saying:
"what address?mark."
the answer was: Mark who?"
he wrote: mark elliott. where do we meet?"
answer: "i'll be in the bird cage, i'll wait for three hours."
now that is intersting, i think. what is the bird cage/where is it/ why is that person wiating for three hours for mark who?
well. that's too much for me today.

Save the Wall is a performance in public space project. Its staged development is planned to occur between early 2005 and mid-2006; the complete work will be realised in late 2006-early 2007. Each stage of the work offers excellent opportunities for creative collaboration and research. Save the Wall is planned as an urban intervention in which a wall is constructed, performed and inscribed. The construction site may be distributed through the urban fabric. The performance may occur inside âthe wallâ; and the wall itself will be a graffiti construction, a site for tagging the erased surfaces of official history.

Paul Carter is Professorial Research Fellow, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne. His public artwork Nearamnew is installed in the plaza of Federation Square. His most recent book is Material Thinking: The Theory Practice of Creative Research (2004).

I'm back again. I am sorry to be forced to published pure sunshine paradise beach pictrures, but that's just how it was. no worries, now that i'm back here in melbourne, where autumn slowly claims his place in the inner atmosphere, these sort of news will become a rare sursprise. so just get yourself indulged...
we spent a week up on the eastcoast, most of the time on a tiny little island called north stradbroke, also known as straddie. as it seems to be quite complicated to get there, the huge massive toursitic snake crowds are usually crawling up the sunshine coast, so that we were quite alone an that island, except for some stray dolphins, lazy mantarays, shy giant turtles, fishing eagles, prattling parrots and huge ferocious huge huge spiders (damn, i can't believe i still didn't get to hug one of these koala things..just wait you cannot escape...hua hau).

there isn't accually too much to tell, as what we did most of the time was hanging around one of 100 beautiful beaches, or swimming in hot water, and trying to pick coconuts (i fell off a tree). there was, of course, laura's birthday, on which we were hanging around a beach, swimming and trying to pick coconuts (i fell off a tree).

and there was the day i finally got a new surfboard. it's 7'2, and the most delightful toy on earth. thanks to my old mentor daniel martos for teaching me the art of catching a fine wave back in good old barranquilla, for it brings me so much joy to paddle around in the foam and then to breakdown exhausted without even having seen the edge of a tiny wave. well, no, it wasn't that bad, relax, daniel.

well, well, well, three wholes in the ground. the beauties of this country are rich and everywhere, and life is very present in every corner; everywhere you point your eyes you find some moving, crawling, eating, and the spider are huge and ferocious, especially the one that entered the tent in the middle of the night.

i am, by the way, happy to be in melbourne. i miss the nothing to do way of living on a deserted island, but melbourne is a good place to come back to. i'm looking forward to meet the students that are taking part in my project, but it seems this may take another week...

anyway, keep it real (immer schoen realkeepen), never trust a coconut tree and don't eat the yellow snow.

ever to see a kangeroo in my life, when, out of thin air, while i had a nightly walkabout to relieve my bladder in the grampian national park an saturday, something appeared just one bush to the left. the kangeroo, which was fairly recognizable as a male, was obviously in the same situation as i (urinating), a situation which, as all men reading this know, is always inviting to a little chat.
i was furthermore allowed to take a picture with my nightshot, the result of which can be observed down below. soon, a stable friendship was established, and the next day he brought his whole family for breakfast. while they all seemed very charming and pretty relaxed, we ackwardly tried not to let it slip through that we grilled kangeroo on a fire the night before.

back in melbourne the campus changed now that university started, 1001 clubs are trying to make you a member. My personal highlight: the chocolate lovers club (no lie), of which i of course became a lifetime member (lie).

is almost impossible. after huge rainstorms, boring berlin in november like grey days we're now plunging into a summer feeling that makes you feel as if on holidays...ha ha. you know, of course you do, that i am currently working hard to find a way to motivate around 10 art students to work for me and do the monkey for a new performance of the play by paul carter called "save the wall" which is a new project around "what is your name", which has been performed last summer in berlin by "prompt - the english drama group" and has been a huge success, especially as great endeavours were made to put some ornamental girls on stage that were to be mistreated by very good looking young men, and i hope this sentences has already carried so much information that you are lost.

now to biology: we went to the botanic garden yesterday, and i still didn't see any kangeroohs, but laura showed me some freaky spiders that are as big as my hands, or even as big as paul becherer's hands, for those who had a chance to know him, and they live in leaves. and there were bats the size of a small common german eagle, or maybe one of these huge kebap meatballs they use for the doener. this country is full of hyperbolic exaggerations.

by the way, inga still has not found a place to live, so she keeps on sitting in that tree on the campus, and i feed her with the little mice i catch in "THE GORE", and then and when some sushi.

that means huge crowds of college kids, with name stickers on their chest and colourful balloons in their hands passing the window of my office, here and there mixing up with to countless japanese student groups, that crawl over the campus like ants at an outdoor picknick when you forgot to close the jam.
strange to be back in the city again, after a cruisy weekend down on the great ocean road...a fabulous place, something in between the french bretagne, the irish west coast and..euh...australia. though still unable to rise my kangeroo count (well, at least i had a k-steak at a dinner at paul's last week), i am very proud to claim to have seen australia's most boring campsite, which i hereby nominate for the world-class spiesser award. just imagine 500 square m of old, dull and very depressed calcified people sitting together, enjoying themselves and the company not at all, a place remote from all buoyancy. we stayed for three hours, but after three hours of not enjoying ourselves and the company we fled this horror, and ended up on a wedding party down the road.

anyway, the coastline down there is stunningly beautiful, and full of surprises, which not everyone can appreciate, as the serpentine road can be quite torturous for some people, and laura was glad we brought a plastic bag.
back here in melbourne, summer's heat is burning holes into florian's shoulders, and it seems that the weather is kind of stalbe, whatever that means here, but it could signify meeting inga at the beach. poor girl, she still hasn't found a suitable room, or penthouse to live in, and i am always in fear that she ends up staying forever on that tree that is here accomodation at the present (see a couple pictures below)
work on the thesis is evolving; we had first meetings with the victorian college of arts, with whose acting students we want to start the workshop of the project called "save the wall". and i finally got my staff card, which makes me an official staff member of the department of architecture. why, you ask? i can't tell, go ask paul. maybe i do, so see you soon,

australia's legendary surf beach down the great ocean road...we jsut packed our things and went off to have a little swim in the pacific. everybody needed it, especially florian "fly" fleischmann, who finally sent off his final thesis after several almost nervous breakdowns during which he would unload his aggressions on innocent random but noisy little american girls. and please have in mind that he lives with two lawyers, one of which has recently been bitten by a tiger in africa ("in africa?" you go. in africa, indeed. african zoos do have tigers, so beware!), thus he knows where his limits are. anyway, there is nothing as smoothing for your soul than spending a sunny day on the beach and having fullfat fish and chips in the evening (no, i didn't ask if they do deep fried mars bar; but we actually tried it ourselves back in the sprengelkiez, and it ended up as a big ball of sugared chocolate with old and cold frying fat around it...the ridiculous thing about it is that it tasted quite alright).

well, there is news from the project. i had my first meeting yesterday in the "centre for ideas" (hey, no lie!). sitting in the office of the head of the centre, i of course had the most brilliant ideas for the whole thing, which i am not allow to reproduce here because i didn't doublecheck it at the "centre of double-checked ideas" which is a kind of security mode they introduced after 9/11 in order to prevent australia from terrorism.

The week-end,

one of the best i ever had in australia...saturday party lights went on, as we went out to celebtrate the "sexy party". dress sexy, feel sexy, an invitation we got by no other than prof. carter.
the pictures were taken at en early stage, it ended, of course, in things no one dares to pronounce...ask florian for more details. the hat on the pictures by the way was paul's, now it seems it's florian's, as he hangs around with it the whole time through. i've just met him in the library with it.

a kind of "glad-we-survived-this" feeling arouses as people see the pictures in today's newspaper of the damage of those incredible rainfalls in the past days, you know: families sitting in trees and so on. strange: this city is not built for rain, although it has the worst weather in the whole of australia.
i had my first dinner party with my new flatmates in the house that has been baptized as THE GORE yesterday; it is now official that florian fly is a true-hearted freak. we got used to the fact that he eats his pizza without cheese, but when i made a desert pizza with nutella and banana he would pick off the bananas. that was soon before i found out that "florian" is accually an anagram of "iron alf".
florian, who is at present extremly unsuccesfull at being funny by posting comments in this blog as "rahim", has only a couple of days left to finish his work.
well, however, i am honestly impressed by the fact that he still hangs around with me in karaoke bars, drinks & belches at my dinner-parties, wears high heels, suspendies and a bra, instead of dwindling away and shivering in fear.

down here. i wasn't lying about the rain. it actually rained for 36 hours, constantly, which actually means constantly; a downfall of 115 cm, which is quite a lot compared to 45 cm average for the whole of febuary; as a result a lot of households have been flooded, trains didn't run, and electricity in my new home didn't work, bla bla bla. however, i had cold tea and untoasted toast while the fridge would start to turn the kitchen into a pool.
but eat this: yesterday night, when the deluge was at its peak, florian "fly" "krake" fleischmann would come to pick me up to go for a karaoke night. it was not one of the karaokes i know, where a lost poor creature on stage would drown itself in "i'm in a another world" kind of feelings, or some drunk bawling teenies, or folke renken.
everybody in this place was having a go, and did it with full fervency. there were even some who brought plastic guitars to play the famous & particularly remarkable 80's style solo of the final countdown.
okay, we were sort of intimidated, but florian had the brilliant idea to sing nena's 99 red balloons in german. after 2 hours we entered the stage, rocked, jumped, rolled over, shouted, clapped, screamed, while everybody started to dance, hooting and cheering.
we ended up being officially cured that night's best act, which includes a certificate, the possiblity to take part of the year's competition at the end of this year(of course we wil), and heaps of fame and fortune, endless groupies and firstclass hotels which will have to be destroyed.

i start to understand what is meant by the expression "melbourne has four seasons in one day". after yesterday's 38 degrees swelter-dizzle-sizzle-super-hot and double shiny day melburnians now have to face a non stop "where-is-my-umbrella" rain disaster. terrible, terrible and cold. bet hey, whoever thought i only came here for good weather, let him/ her be blamed officially on the market place, as it is only part of the truth. the other part (not to mention the part with the waves), my research project, is still in a status of "hanging in the air", cause i still didn t get my staff card which allows me through its barcode to access my work space. and to get out of it (no lie).

anyway, as paul carter would say, we're working on it.

yesterday i finally moved into 300 gore street. i had to leave my little room at florian fly's, and his private zoo of moths, flies, ants, maggots and of course that giant cockroach that usually sits on the toilet seat. he actually has a very nice apartment, close to gore street, which made my removal the fastest and easiest in my whole life.

i share this house with 5 other people, all of them extremly nice and friendly. a closer personification will, of course, be posted as fast as possible. i know you like this whole big brother stuff, otherwise you wouldn't really be reading this, would you?
there is a rather big garden around it, you can pick some nectarines at the moment. soon the olives are going to be alright.
it's between smith street and famous brunswick street. brunswick street is, for berlin conaisseurs, something like bergmannstr. meets simon-dach-str. meets kottbusser tor meets the freaks around the zoo and some mitte people.
smith street is the same in a neukoelln version.

well then folks, i just got a call that good old fellow student inga arrived in melbourne right now. the first thing she did was to complain about the rain and to buy a cellphone. i wonder if there is a connection between those to actions.

life with public transport is impossible. not yet able to fullfill the australian dream (a car; a holden ute in the best case, not to mention the house with quarter acre) i bought a bycicle today; and a helmet. it is an australian law to use helmets when you drive a bike. i know not any law in germany that makes you look like a full-time nerdie, but i can adapt.

when the seller heard my name, he started rambling some weird stories about leif erikson, the viking hero who disovered Amerika before old columbus did. he said everybody thinks the vikings were evil and cold-blooded. but, as a matter of fact, as they landed in Newfoundland and met some local indians, one of the squaws would willingly show her bare breasts to the strangers, at which point the fierce nordic warriors ran away as fast as they could.
funnily enough, florian fly's only comment to this story was:
"that hasn't changed today."

thumbs are still rising up.
today was my first meeting with paul carter; he sat me in front of a huge fan and interrogated me. i drank a lot of water in order to keep my tongue humid enough to speak at increasingly high speed. in the end we sorted out what i will possibly be working on the next few months. i'll tell you as soon as i understood.

i have been greatly introduced to melbourne's inner secret rituals by berlin co-veteran florian "fly", the meatman, or, as some might say, "he-who-is-covered-with-flowers", one of which is hanging around the australian centre around 7pm, precisely the time the security guard steps in. he wears dark sunglasses, and a big black motorbike helmet, which make him look like a deformed sort of alien. he then tells us how many thieves/burglars/terrorists he catched today, lets his walkie talkie cough a couple of times, and off he goes on another mission to save autralia's citizens. florian fly has just agreed to interview him for this forum. so tune in for more outstanding adventures....right here!
